Introduction
In most organizations, leadership is very important in driving them forward and improving on the patients’ safety. Many people hold the belief that leadership is crucial only in organizations that are focused on making profits or business oriented. However, it is logical to perceive leadership as significant in all aspects related to the organization’s management. This is because any organization or institution without a leader who is effective cannot survive in the competitive business environment that exists in this contemporary world. This paper discusses literature that have been published on the subject of management and clinical leadership in the nursing fraternity. The information would provide a conclusive understanding of the subject under investigation.
Thesis statement
Many sources have suggested that leadership is usually an art that is exponentially learnt and therefore a learning process that takes some time. The aim of this discussion is to critically analyze leadership significance as well as the importance of management in the nursing fraternity in relation to the safety of the patients in healthcare organizations.
Leadership and people’s vision in relation to the future
To start with, transformational leadership theory is where a leader motivates the morale of the team he or she is heading. This inspires the team to work together so as to attain the objectives of the organization or the company (Stanley, 2011). In relation to this paper, we are referring to an organization or institution that is involved in the provision of nursing services that ensures patients’ safety. For example, a good leader, particularly in the nursing industry should aim at improving the quality of healthcare, making health care affordable and accessible, ensuring the patients’ safety among others (Marquis & Huston, 2014). In addition, he must be able to motivate the service personnel and act as an example of how operations are to be carried out ensuring practice based applications are implemented. It is imperative that these objectives may vary from one institution to the other, depending on the focus of the leader’s, as well as the current problems and challenges that the nursing institution is experiencing. Despite of the challenges, an effective nursing and clinical management leader should strive to manage the financial resources and the available funds that are used to run the organization or any project related to health care so as to achieve the goals and objectives of the organization. Good leadership should ensure that the funds and resources of the organization are used to buy hospital equipment that ensure safety of the patients at the hospital. This is in line with patients’ satisfaction theory. Such safety equipment may vary from diagnostic equipment to emergency equipment like fire extinguishers. It is worth to note that this is the situation where the skills as well as the effectiveness of a leader can be tested in the nursing field (Marquis & Huston 2012). Ideally a leader who portrays greater promise of attaining the senior leader’s and the institution’s clients' expectations or achieving more can be categorized as more effective if he or she was to be compared to another leader who portrays less promising outcomes.
Secondly, the transactional leadership theory focuses on supervision. In the organizational management, there is usually the assumption that leadership is the act of challenging or changing a team of individual mission or vision in regards to the future. However, the transactional theory does not give the nurse leader the sole mandate to change the vision of the nursing organization (Howieson & Thiagarajah, 2011). To some extent, this may be true for any organization may stagnate in terms of growth if significant changes are not introduced. The argument here is that there must be some disruption on how operations and processes are run right from the top-level of management to ensure some growth in the organization. Normally, if the magnitude of change is great, the likelihood of greater growth (or sometimes collapse) of the nursing organization may occur in the future if the change is properly planned, implemented and executed. However, this does not imply that organizational changes that are management-induced will automatically yield better outcomes for the nursing organization. Some management-induced changes may go wrong leading to the collapse of the nursing organization. This has led to the use of certain indicators to evaluate a leader’s effectiveness in nursing and even other industries, so as to overcome the obstacles that may limit an organization from achieving her goals and objectives. The role of a leader in the nursing organization is usually inclined towards enhancing the quality of service delivery in the organization or hospital. The quality of service delivery is usually reinforced by having machines and equipment that are less injurious to the patients. This is supported in patients’ satisfaction theory. The nursing leader should therefore bid or purchase high standard machines and equipment with the sole aim of ensuring that no harm would be caused by the equipment and machines purchased. It is also imperative for the nursing leader to maintain the quality of service delivery at the highest level possible without compromising the health of the patient. This can only be achieved through proper supervision.
Thirdly, the trait theory of leadership focuses on the unique qualities of a leader such as being innovative. Continuous innovation for a long time has been used in the technological field and currently has been adopted in other industries as well. It is now a very important tool in the nursing field. In fact, the nursing organizations that have failed to do continuous innovation in the quality of their services and products have been reported to suffer adversely especially from competitors who continuously innovate their services and products. Studies have shown that continuous innovation often result to increased cost of healthcare provision, but usually clients are willing and ready to pay for such increased costs so long as the services are of quality. It is worth to note that the introduction of innovation is not an instant thing, but a continuous process that takes time. In this continuous process, the nurse leader plays a significant role in determining whether the healthcare facility should embark on innovation or not (Berson & Stieglitz, 2013). Moreover, the continuous innovation process usually goes hand in hand with the introduction of changes and ensuring the patients’ safety. The argument here is that no innovation can take place without the introduction of changes. This reasoning takes us back to the authenticity of the subject which states that leadership is generally about the introduction of challenges or changes that interferes with people’s vision of the future. A leader who is effective should look for innovative techniques that are likely to improve on patients’ safety. Such a leader would focus on safety techniques in the hospital without necessarily changing or challenging the people’s vision of the future, unless the safety techniques the nurse leader is rooting for may change the vision of the hospital itself. Moreover, the nursing leader should engage in improving the accessibility and the affordability of healthcare services by using facilities that guarantees patients’ safety. This may be attributed to unique personal attributes that may surpass the obstacles that may limit the achievement of the objectives and goals of the organization (Henwood, 2014). Such unique attributes may include: initiative, courage, ability to handle stress, persistence and integrity. These attributes may assist the leader to think and analyze issues critically, initiate goals, skillfully communicate with other nurses in the team as well as collaborate with other medical workers in nursing related duties to ensure the safety of the patients. This kind of approach will would ensure that patients’ satisfaction theory is met.
Conclusion
According to previous literature, leadership in usually an art that is exponentially learnt and therefore a learning process that takes some time. This paper has critically analyzed the significance of leadership as well as management in the nursing field in relation to the safety of the patients a healthcare organization. It has also supported the notion that “Not all leadership is about changing or challenging people’s vision of the future”. For example, a good leader, particularly in the nursing industry should aim at improving the quality of healthcare, making health care affordable, and accessible as well as ensuring patient safety among others based on transformational theory of leadership. Despite of the challenges, an effective nursing and clinical management leader should strive to manage the financial resources and the available funds that are used to run the organization or any project related to health care so as to achieve the goals and objectives of the organization. This is well explained in transactional leadership theory. The funds and resources of the organization are normally used to buy hospital equipment that ensures safety of the patients at the hospital. The trait theory of leadership focuses on continuous innovation, which for a long time has been used in the technological field and currently has been adopted in other industries as well. It is now a very important tool in the nursing field. A leader who is effective should look for innovative techniques that are likely to improve on patients’ safety. It is also imperative for the nursing leader to maintain the quality of service delivery at the highest level possible without compromising the health of the patient.
