How do care home staff understand, manage and respond to agitation in people with dementia? A qualitative study. BMJ Open, 8(6), e022260. doi: http://dx.doi.org/10.1136/bmjopen-2018-022260
The study by Rapaport et al. (2018) aimed to shed light on the way care home staff understood and responded to agitation in people suffering from dementia and the factors that influenced the way the agitation was managed. For this study, a qualitative thematic analysis was chosen as the design. The staff recruited for the study belong to six different care homes in South East England. This consisted of nursing and residential care homes located in urban and rural settings. The interviews were carried out using purposive sampling and involved 25 care home staff of different gender, ethnicity, age and nationality. The participants also had different roles and experiences. The results from the study highlighted four different themes involving resident behaviour, staff response to agitation, limitations associated with the response of the staff and understanding of individual help. Research revealed staff struggled to manage the residents and were often found to be powerless, frightened and overwhelmed. The following study is useful with respect to our research as it helps in identifying the gaps and shortcomings in responding to agitation due to dementia. It also gives an insight on the dilemma faced by care staff in responding appropriately. Lastly, it highlights the need for person-centred approaches and supportive care home environments.
