Brantford is a city with a population of around 134,203 according to the 2016 census, and hence its waste production is also quite large in terms of mass. Waste management and recycling play an important role in the economy and cleanliness of the city. Improper waste management and ignorance of proper disposal also affect many animals and bird populations in the region. It is important to know that managing waste keeps the city clean, protects the system from diseases, and can improve the city’s economy. Brantford’s population produces a large amount of waste that could affect the cleanliness of the city and will definitely cost more in the future in terms of public health and expenditure to control it (City of Brantford, 2019). Waste management is not only about disposing of waste but also a strategy to productively use it to create new useful products.

There are many waste management units in the city of Brantford (City of Brantford, 2019). Individuals can reach out to these units or transfer waste through pickup trucks. They are located across the city and are easily accessible. Some of the disposal units in the city include Brantford Disposal Service, Modern Waste Products, Waste Management – Brantford Hauling, and many more.

Laurier University has taken a strong stand for its sustainability values towards nature and is now recognized as an institutional leader in sustainability. The Laurier Sustainability Office provides measurable values including financial support, compliance with legislation, and significant institutional recognition. The institutional goal of Laurier University is to improve the well-being of the community by strengthening sustainability in everyday educational, operational, and community processes. At Laurier, sustainability is not only environmentalism but also focuses on social issues and economic development.

The scope of sustainability in the university involves education, operations, and community partnerships. Education is not only limited to academics but also includes outreach and awareness-raising (Laurier, 2019). The university’s sustainability goal for environmental sustainability refers to the health of the earth’s natural resources, from geology to living organisms. Economic sustainability involves conserving existing resources and using them optimally to achieve a responsible and beneficial balance. Social sustainability includes knowledge of social and environmental justice issues, including healthy and affordable resources.

One of the objectives of the university is to improve sustainable food systems in campus services. The aim is to work with on-campus food service providers to increase local food purchasing in terms of percentage, focus on plant-based meals, and reduce food wastage and packaging. This is a mid-term plan, and its effectiveness will be indicated through an increase in the number of local foods on campus. It will also enhance methods through which students and staff can access local food and build a formal program to raise awareness about edible tree and shrub plantation at the university. This is a short-term plan, and its success will be indicated by the number of new avenues and the volume of products available.

Sustainability is not only the responsibility of the system but also of every individual. I am committed to the sustainable use of resources within my power. I will make sure to use public transport to reduce fuel consumption. I will follow the 3R rule of reduce, reuse, and recycle in my life. All resources provided by nature will be used efficiently and sustainably. I will also contribute to the Laurier Sustainability Office through my services for the university and community. All awareness programs within or outside the university will receive my support. I also encourage my fellow students and the public of Brantford to contribute towards Laurier University’s goal for a sustainable ecosystem.
