The Oprah Winfrey show has been telecasted for the last two decades and it is the host of the show who has been in headlines throughout her career. The black woman who has established herself in America as a successful woman (Saner, 2018). In her talk show telecasted in the year 2015, it is openly talked about poverty from which Oprah had gone through.
Oprah mentions that she had to wear potato sacks. It was inevitable because there was a time when there were racism and poverty united together in America (Saner, 2018). Struggling at that time and getting a position is all about Oprah. In the episode, she talks about poverty. Poverty on the basis of race or ethnicity has been quite predominant and it still exists. The poverty rate in black families is about 9.9% and about 46% of black children are in poverty. The income levels vary in the racial groups and it has been seen that the people of different races are subjected to a major amount of discrimination. the difference in the wage is also due to the inequality and lesser availability of proper education (Firebaugh & Acciai, 2016). This difference leads to the major elevation in the difference. These issues have been talked about and well represented in the talk show.
In her talk show, Oprah as well mentions the discrimination and harassment she faced when she was part of a local radio show and due to this discrimination, she was thrown out of the job within seven months of joining.
Another important point that must be mentioned is a philanthropy that is done by Winfrey in order to take care of education through her organization. She has been donating a lot in order to make sure that some lives can be made better and whatever she has to face would not be a part of other lives. She has been donating millions of money to her charity organization named The Angel Network who works in the betterment of children and helps in their education (McCarty, 2016). The poverty-ridden children are provided with education through this network. It also provided other necessities such as school shoes, bags, and other school utilities to impoverished African children. In order to increase the educational facilities, the network continues to build primary schools around 12 countries to provide free education to those who cannot afford it. This is not only limited to American blacks, but the schools have also been prepared in Africa and its regions where the strike of poverty is much severe and daily bread butter earning is difficult. Apart from education, the network helped in making the hurricane-affected area better by providing necessary amenities. Through this network, a group is also associated with providing free books to the children. Similarly, there is a number of such charities that are done by the Angel Network. This organization makes sure to remove discrimination and also make the lives of women and children a better way. In a nutshell, it can be deemed that Oprah Winfrey has risen from rags and is now striving to make the world better for someone by removing poverty and discrimination. This is all possible due to the compassion she bears for the people.
