1) A brief history about Australia’s electoral system. Adult franchise was implemented between 1859 and 1896. Women’s voting right was granted in 1899. In 1856 secret votes casting on ballot paper issued by the government (Brent, 2006). In 1962 aboriginal people were given rights to vote.
2) The types of electoral system implemented in Australia; preferential and optional preferential voting systems and there pros and cons.
3) The proportional presentation; list system and single transferable vote system. The ample method to choose a stable and strong government.
The main purpose of the article was to make the reader aware about the voting system of Australia, what methods are used and how different electoral system have different impact depending upon the population. The author successfully added all the points needed to be known to explain and defend electoral system in the light of different formations of democracy. The author critically analysed all the viewpoints supported by facts. His target audience are the one who is involved in the democracy of the Australia. He reflected on all the advantages and disadvantages viz; voting rights, proportional presentation, integrity of electoral system etc.
The author’s vision behind writing this article is to investigate the rights, complexities and problems of the electoral system, in Australia. He argued that not any one single electoral system can satisfy all the requirements of electoral process of democracy. Not only has the outcome, the electoral system also shaped the party system. The electoral system has direct impact on the stability and functionality of the government.
