Introduction

Now more than ever before, children need protection from a range of disasters and emergencies in Australia to guarantee their future wellbeing. Despite being a first world nation, Australia has too had a fair share of its challenges (both natural and man-made) that risk haunting the future generations of the Oceania nation. From the age of globalization and the internet, physical, psychological, racial segregation, commercial sexual exploitation to name but a few, children have been the subject of different forms of risks and abuses thus making it necessary to protect this future citizens (Miller, n.d). Similarly, while credit can be applauded on International organizations like save the children, Plan International Australia, The Smith Family, World Vision Australia and others, the need to protect children and enrich their livelihood is a social issue that requires joint efforts in the face of the challenges children face in the contemporary world. In Australia, these are indelibly written with the race certain races discriminated across the divide. Now, systematic racism and Xenophobia are common and end up affecting children; of the marginalized races. Thus, children need to be center of focus if the status quo is to change. This real-life experience reflects on my experience and interaction with – girl and the save the children early childhood program I intend to implement to encourage education of children of marginalized races. In their study carried out around Australia, The Challenging Racism Project found out that 20% of the people in Australia have at least once been subjected to racism (Australian Human Rights Commission, n.d).

Reflection on the Real-life Experience

Having worked with Save the Children Australian consortium on early childhood education, I am now familiar with the principal factors for the low education turn up of girls within the Australian education system. As is known, the girl child is by far the most disregarded race in the world and Australia is not exempt but this discount is even more alarming among the Australian girls analyzing by their education experiences. The experience of – girl gave me a blueprint of how irrelevant how some girls consider education to the girl child. Education is a hint that Save the Children Program for early childhood education needs to intensely cultivate within the Australian community. – girl was unable to attend school not because it was her choice but because of the obvious financial obstacles that many middle background families find themselves trapped in Australia. My engagements with – girl family showed that her family was a middle background family that even lacked in the basic services and necessities in life giving the indication that even as – girl was arching to go to school, her completion rate would have been zero. I believe, if Save the Children Australia is to achieve its goal, there needs to be more initiative dedicated to the education of girls in the country. Apparently, this would require initiatives to first and foremost uplift the living standards of their families in terms of finances, sensitization on the importance of the girl child education and establishing education facilities suiting to the demands and status of the girl child in Australia.

Furthermore, the indication that – girl brother was going to school over her stresses even more the need to sensitize this community. Like many other diffident races across the world, I find that the girls are still pivoted on traditional superstitions which have done nothing good but instead promoted a patriarchy hierarchy in their community where the boy child is favored at the expense of girls. This is saddening especially with me knowing that this is a race already living counter to the natives’ view of their race. It is my view that Australia as a whole need sensitization about the emancipation of women today and the need for their joint efforts to challenge the status quo on how they are looked at by native Australians in the country. From my interactions with – girl, she possess a revered potential to make it within the education sector but for many reasons, the girl is living in a society which is giving her nearly to no chance to feat her education journey. As an employee working with Save the Children early childhood education program, this revelation leaves me thoughtful of what it is for – girls family to discount the girls education career and instead turn her into a house helper.

This real-life experience with – girl inspired my view about education. Indeed, education is a tool that needs to be accessible to everyone in society regardless of their status. It is through this forum that individuals like – girl can liberate their families and communities. It was a pleasure to me knowing of the all-embracing passion to the subject of education that – girl possess. As a member promoting the early childhood education program of the Save the Children, this signal was a good start point for our program. To me the suggestion shown by - girl was sufficient evidence to discern that there are many more children like – girl whose education desires are being stifled by their families apathy towards education. Therefore, the onus now falls on Save the Children Australia and I to build on this point of positivity to influence stakeholder buy-ins of parents and guardians to take their children to school. 

As an altruistic the Save the Children early childhood education programs promises a lot to me. I could not have asked being assigned any program better than the current program, early childhood education program. Growing up, I have read a lot of literature about Australia as one of the oldest and continuing cultures in the world. However, I always found it disheartening to know that the race has always been the center of gross injustices and discrimination characterized by forced abortions, loss of their traditional culture, denial of citizenship rights, access to better health and more importantly education. As such, I hope to fully absorb myself in this program and contribute towards helping to bridge the gap between boy-girl children in education. I intend to do this through training education providers in Australian local communities to ensure that the best education services are provided to girl children. Secondly, although I anticipate that there will be reluctance from parents and individuals in the community, I am working on honing my interpersonal and communication skills that will enable me enlighten members in the community on the indispensable need to educate their children, a key which will help uplift their community standards.

My exposure and interactions with many underprivileged children is the knowledge I intend to hold onto going into this program. Now, I can say that I am familiar with the challenges that children in these communities face and what they need to overcome these challenges. This knowledge will be primary to me in arranging resources and lesson plans that are relevant to the target population to offer a greater learning experience. Indeed, this knowledge will enable me to provide personal centered lessons to enable children achieve maximum benefits from the program.

To my professional development in the field of humanitarian activities, this program will take me a step further in terms of developing my interpersonal skills, team work, research, data analysis, public speaking skills and presentation. Thinking about this program, it has already presented to me an imaginary challenge of how I am likely to face resentment of the Aboriginals considering their retrograde beliefs about education. Accordingly, I am already challenging myself; I need to sharpen my public speaking skills to inspire them buy-into this program. I have previously carried out research about – girl to equip myself with the needs of school-going children in this community; it is this information that Save the Children is basing on to design an education program suitable to the needs of the Australian girl child. At last, I will have to make a professional presentation on the program to the management of save the children Australia which will be based on to make future policies related to the program.

All in all, this real-life experience promises to be a taxing yet reviving activity to my professional development as a humanitarian worker who achieves satisfaction by helping others in the community. I could not have been more grateful than working on a program that is intended to close the education inequality gap of the girl child in Australia. As it flows from my reflections, I have readied myself to counter all possible challenges to ensure the program is fulfilled and achieves the intentions of the Save the Children early childhood program among school going girl children in the country.
