The discussion provided below is based on the situation of Carla and her family who have been subjected to difficult situations and have the minimum ability to receive any kind of help. However, it is evident that they do not have adequate amount of knowledge on the healthcare provisions that have been initiated by the government, which would eventually allow them to take proper care of themselves effectively.
DiscussionWhat are the characteristics of the individuals in the case studyThe individuals that have been identified in the case study are going through numerous health and financial issues. It can be evidently stated that they are highly incapable of taking care of them and are going through innumerable crisis. The study revolves around the condition of Carol and her family who have been subjected to numerous atrocities regarding their daily lives, occupation and health situation as well. There are primarily four individuals in the case study, with each of them having distinctive characteristics. The four individuals are Carol, John, Annie and Robbie. None of them have enough education but manage their level best to be employed. However, both John and Annie are suffering from serious health condition and with bonus point Annie is pregnant and is incapable to work as well. Also, it is evident that none of them have enough healthcare or benefits which could have helped them in taking care of their family.
If the social model of health is to be considered, then the individuals are facing more than economic and social problems. Also, they do not have enough education to go for further significant aspect of solving their problems. Thus, it is highly indicative that their problems are more economical and physical. With their minimum amount of income and huge responsibilities, the family is still very much optimistic with the idea that they would be able to endure the situation effectively and would have the proper acquisition to take care of the baby, the reason why Josh intends to quit school. Education being one of the most essential components makes it evident that individuals must continue to thrive towards it properly (McCormack et al., 2017).
What are the social determinants of health that are evident in the case studyFor identifying the social determinants of health (SDOH) from the case study, it is essential to understand the meaning first. The SDOH comprises of certain amount of terms that mainly addresses the typical conditions that intends to influence the living condition of an individual (Adler, Glymour amp Fielding, 2016). The factors that form the SDOH have a great impact on the lives of the people and influence their health status as well. If the situation of Carol is to be considered, then it is evident that some of the key aspects of SDOH that could match their current situation. There might be a possibility that the SDOH determinants would not allow the individuals to obscure maximum amount of facilities and they will not be able to gain enough knowledge of the situation and would not be able to work on it as much as possible.
All the four social determinants have been found to be evident in the case study. The social determinants that are mainly followed in Australia comprises of income, education, employment and social support (Garg, Boynton-Jarrettamp Dworkin, 2016). All of these factors have been properly addressed here, making it evident that Carol is facing tremendous amount of problems with the enigmatic tragedy of her life. There is not enough income range from the side of her ex-husband or the kids, neither their health condition is enough reliable to make sure that they would be able to find a rather decent employment nor they have knowledge about the health facilities provided by the government. Carol had to survive much of her life on social support to take care of her children also there is lack of substantial amount of education for her and for her children as well. It is clear that Carol is facing issues related to the social determinants.
Select one of the social determinants and describe the best way(s) to address this issue in order to have an impact on the whole of populationKeeping in mind the current situation of Carol, it is evident to consider that she is going through an extremely rough patch, leading to the idea that a substantial amount of attention is required in understanding the determinants that has been subjected by Carol and her family. One of the key determinants that must be addressed here comprises of their educational factor. Education is one of the essential components of a persons life. From the case study provided, it is evident that Carol never got proper educations and thus, she lacked the understanding of its value. Due to lack of education, Carol is not able to understand the kind of role it plays in earning the money and gaining substantial amount of knowledge. Also, it is evident that the more knowledge an individual has, there is a significant amount of possibility for them to cause an improvisation in their skills that would lead to their own proficiency of getting a job (Giloth, 2018).
One of the biggest ways this issue can be addressed is by spreading awareness on the importance of education and how it can improve the daily lives of an individual. In addition, students and their parents should be provided with enough knowledge with the help of proper meetings and conferences to convince them not to make their children drop out of school. It is also essential that students are being provided with adequate amount of sex education by their parents and the school authorities to avoid teen pregnancy, it being one of the biggest reasons why children drop out of school most of the time (Heissel, 2017).
What roles should health professionals play in addressing this issueA health professional must make sure that no matter what might be the situation that the individual is being subjected to, they never quit their education (Donisch, Brayamp Gewirtz, 2016). The health professional would have to present the possibilities that having an education would allow them to emulsify the concept of a better future. For instance, wanting to have a better and stable life would be one of the key aspects anticipated by the individual. The health professional can indulge in a counselling session with the individual and highlight the importance of skills and techniques for getting a job. It is also essential to make sure that the adequate amount of knowledge has been gained by the individual in understanding the gravity of the situation. If the case study is to be considered, then during the time when a health professional would be engaging to take proper care of Annie, then he/she can take the initiative to talk to Annies boyfriend about how he should not quit his school and that rather having a proper education would only make sure that he can acquire a much better job to take proper care of Annie and the child. Thus, having an informal conversation and presenting a varied range of possibilities would be one of the integral ways to convey to the individual about a better future and the kind of life he would be able to give to his child.
The discussion provided above led to a better understanding of the various factors that have made sure that Carol and her family can lead a better life and full of prosperity. The discussion also led to the understanding of the kind of responsibilities that must be undertaken by a heath professional to make sure that they have the ability and financial capability to have a better life.
