What?

Introduce the question you have selected and briefly describe your initial thoughts on the question you will be reflecting upon.

The question that is selected for the assessment is why does society expect healthcare professionals to act ethically? Ethics in healthcare guides the work of healthcare professionals in the provision of healthcare services. It helps the healthcare workers to ensure that the patient will be treated with dignity and respect (Haahr et al., 2020). In addition, the decision that is made was fair and dignified. The initial thoughts on the question are how the governing action would take place and how a healthcare professional or a registered nurse can make a decision in an ethical dilemma. I found that the question is an important one where the respect and quality of care for the patient are understood. The initial thoughts that what sort of moral dilemma will be there and how the ethics are going to be followed in the practices must follow (Stievano et al., 2019). The question will help me to get an insight into ethics and its role play in the healthcare system. By this, question it will become clear what will be the expectation of society and how the healthcare professionals be able to act ethically.

So What?

Expand on the identified question. How do you feel about it? Why is it important?

In what ways might you experience a conflict with your personal values?

In what ways have your past experiences influenced your belief about this situation?

What different perspective might others have and why? Use ethical concepts discussed so far in the unit to explore the question.

I feel that it is an important question from the perspective of society and healthcare professionals. Addressing the question is very crucial to make society well versed in the fact of why ethics is needed for society. Ethics in healthcare is important to make the decision that helps healthcare professionals to decide the way to deal with the situation. It will also redirect toward the values, research and dignity that are considered. Health ethics will lead to the promotion of values that allows the prioritization and justification behind the decision-making. A Registered nurse, comes under the role to give the quality of care to the patient, families and communities (Morley et al., 2019). For example: if a patient is not willing to take treatment and refuses. Then, giving them the right advice and making a decision with the engagement of family is needed. It is an ethical way to deal with the situation that an RN has encountered. The decision will allow a positive impact and steer the RN away from unjust outcomes. In circumstances, where the patient and their families will be presented with another thought and as an RN it becomes important to meet the care requirements will lead to conflicts. It is seen that personal value like providing care to the patient is important that is making the RN obliged to follow a certain set of rules and protocols. In such a situation, there are high chances present of conflict. In past, I encountered an issue where one of my patients refuses to take medications. On that day, I was feeling very low and upset that the patient is not taking the medication. I can see that her situation is getting worsen. But I was unable to take any decision as I was not having the consent of my family. The experience was an eye-opener for me and I have to take a proactive approach while dealing with patients. The different perspective will involve providing the medication to the patient when the situation is worsening. Also, it will involve a discussion with the respective team to provide the medication to the patient. Again, in this situation at the social level, it is not acceptable to deal with the patient in this manner. In this situation, the ethical concept that needs to be used is consent from the patient's family and the autonomy required to be considered (Palazoğlu et al., 2019). As a nurse, I have to follow a certain set of expectations that make me able to act ethically and provide quality healthcare services. Four ethical principles that need to be followed are that is beneficence, no maleficence, autonomy, and justice. It will help me to act in the best manner and allow the quality of outcomes.

What now?

What specifically have you learnt from reflecting on this question?

What will you do with this new understanding to improve your healthcare practice?

I learnt about the ethical principles that make me able to provide care with respect and dignity to the patient. It will involve the idea that how I can provide autonomous practices, what practices of mine will help me to give error-free care and what action of mine is going to justify the requirements of my patients  (Fawaz et al., 2020). With this understanding, I will be able to meet quality care and delivery within the nursing standards. It helps me to overcome one of the major issues which is compromised care. The application of ethical principles will make me able to meet the care requirement with the integration of ethical principles. In conclusion, learning is going to help me with the achievement of desired outcomes. It will eliminate the chances of errors that are observed in past experiences (Oldland et al., 2020). By application of ethical principles, the dilemma can be overcome.
