Ineffective Interpersonal and Interprofessional Communication

Communication with parents, families, communities and even with other professional healthcare practitioners is very important when it comes to developing a responsible and supporting team which is promoting and maintaining the overall well-being of the patient (Velásquez et al., 2022). I noted that my competencies were aligned with the Joint commissions national patient safety goals that are improving staff communication. Some of my strengths are in using effective communication skills and techniques when it comes to the information system and communication technologies which I am using to discuss and interact with other team members. My communication with the patient's family and even the community members is understandable (Taylor et al., 2017). I have been using specific terminologies whenever required. I have also been expressing my opinions and knowledge to other team members we need to come to patient care and population health and therefore this has consequently led me to have clear conscience and confidence in my work delivery. To promote improvement, I will engage in the following strategies;

  1. I will inculcate proper decision-making strategies about the proper healthcare policies and programs. I have also encouraged proper clear decision-making and
  2. Active listening which will increase the idealization of opinions among team members.
  3. Use of respectful language in a different context of culture, power, hierarchy and expertise
  4. Establish a proper conflict resolution mechanism to develop a positive interprofessional working relationship.
  5. Cultural Safety

To develop a culturally sensitive communication, I must be aware of the cultural diversity influencing the patient's values, beliefs and attitudes. Culturally sensitive communication is mandatory for nurses who must respect their culturally diverse backgrounds (Curtis et al., 2019). Some of the ways that will promote effective cultural communication strategies include following the code of conduct that requires adherence to cultural professional differences. The other strategy will be to follow the workplace diversity policies which emphasize recruitment and employment of multicultural staff promoting workplace diversity. There is also a need to engage in cultural awareness education to promote diversity awareness and expectations while reviewing job performance and standards. The cultural competency training will also help me develop my patient and employee literature on sign language while developing my linguistic prowess and multiple language understanding (Tujague & Ryan 2021). I will also increase my community engagement through collaboration with other leaders and organizations. This will help me to effectively understand the community’s cultural needs. This will help me develop my cultural idealization while participating in community nursing and well-being planning and development activities (Fleming et al.,2019). These activities may include issues such as health issuance, wellness screenings and health education initiatives. With this in mind, it will be easy to properly communicate interpersonally.

Self-Care

Self-care practices are aimed at ensuring that an individual is promoting proper health, maintaining proper health and coping with illness and disability while supporting a healthcare provider. As a nurse, I am obligated to implement self-care intentionally by maintaining physical, mental and emotional health (Priya et al., 2022). Some of the ways that I am using to promote self-care is through the physical self-care management strategies which include taking care of my body in terms of the amount of sleep and the physical activities I am engaging in. I am also engaging in psychological self-care where I am concerned about my thinking learning and growing. This includes other activities which are focused on my personal and professional growth. When it comes to emotional self-care I am concerned about my thoughts and feelings and how are my love myself to experience certain feelings which are honouring myself and my consequent emotional well-being. My social self-care also relates to how I am buildings my relationships with some of the key personnel. For example, as a nurse, I am mindful of how I balance my relationship professionally while at work to prevent burnout. Another area that involves self-care is professional self-care which requires that I find a healthy work-life balance (Butler et al., 2019). This will help in preventing stress and the accumulation of burnout. Environmental self-care also involves living and operating in a proper environment and creating an atmosphere that is fostering peace, tranquillity, productivity and creativity. This is aimed at improving and influencing my interpersonal communication.

Resilience

Resilience is the ability of a person to adapt well to adversities while remaining hopeful about the future. Resilience is a nursing skill that nurses must possess to survive and thrive in their working environment, which faces a lot of adversities. To continue showing resilience nurses are supposed to embrace and enforce accountability. This will help in improving their communication as well as facilitate policies and guidelines on how to perform as a team. Nurses are also required to incorporate more self-care practices as this is going to establish resilience in their nursing practice (Troy et al., 2023). This should involve pre-work meditation. Other strategies enhancing resilience at work include accepting change. For example, the current covid-19 pandemic caused a lot of significant losses and resources in the healthcare environment. My ability to accept the constant changes taking place within the environment is essential for my successful performance of duty. Developing a supporting system for colleagues is also a strategy that can build resilience. The nursing environment usually causes a lot of emotional strain. Nurses go through a lot of stress resulting from patient losses and anger from family members (Seiler et al., 2019). To avoid the common stressors nurses can build resilience by developing support systems which can form a dynamic shift to help them cope with such challenging situations.
