Chosen Area of Professional Practice

The chosen topic is “Nurse-Patient Communication in Palliative Care Settings”. A key component of providing healthcare is nurse-patient communication, which is especially important in palliative care settings. Effective communication is even more important in this area of nursing practise since it not only influences the physical care of patients but also takes into account their emotional, psychological, and spiritual requirements. During periods of extreme vulnerability and emotional distress, nurses frequently interact with patients and their families in the context of palliative care (Kwame & Petrucka, 2020). To develop trust, guarantee patient happiness, and deliver comprehensive care, it is crucial to be able to communicate therapeutically and empathically. Furthermore, effective communication is essential for encouraging discussions regarding advance care planning, solving difficult ethical conundrums, and helping patients decide on the best course of treatment (Abdolrahimi et al., 2017).

Reason for Choosing the Area of Professional Practice

I chose "Nurse-Patient Communication in Palliative Care Settings" because of my experiences, observations, and a desire for compassionate patient care. Effective nurse-patient communication, especially in palliative care, has transformed my clinical rotations and experiences in many healthcare settings. These experiences showed the necessity of treating physical symptoms and supporting life-limiting illness patients emotionally.I am passionate about holistic nursing care and effective communication (Schroeder & Lorenz, 2018). As a nurse, being able to engage with patients, actively listen to their problems, and treat them with dignity and respect during vulnerable moments aligns with my values and goals. This understanding will improve my clinical practice and help me promote communication skills in nursing education and practise. I want to become a skilled and compassionate palliative care nurse who can improve patients' lives by meeting their physical and emotional needs (Kourkouta & Papathanasiou, , 2014).

Significance and Relevance

Communication is essential for patient-centred palliative care. Communication helps palliative care patients with complex illnesses and mental anguish meet their physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. Nurse-patient communication improves patient satisfaction, symptom control, and treatment adherence. This field addresses healthcare challenges like ageing and chronic and life-limiting diseases (Roodbeen et al., 2020). Palliative care nurses must be well-trained and able to communicate to meet the requirements of severely sick patients. This aspect of nursing can assist nurses provide compassionate end-of-life care to patients and their families. This topic's literature review may reveal research gaps, enabling further research and evidence-based communication techniques.Global conditions necessitating remote treatment have increased telehealth and virtual communication platforms. Technology impacts nurse-patient communication in palliative care (Hagan et al., 2018).

Proposed search strategy

To study relevant peer reviewed articles for the topic I accessed academic databases such as Google Scholar, PubMed and PubMed Central. These databases cover most of the nursing and healthcare related literature. The combination of boolean operators like AND OR is used to search for relevant articles. The keywords used are ‘nurse-patient communication’, ‘compassionate care’, ‘ palliative care’, ‘communication strategies’, ‘patient-centred care’ and ‘end-of-life care’. To refine the search strategy the papers are taken from 10 years. Language which is preferred is English and rest languages are excluded (Grewal et al., 2016). In addition this I will include the relevant collection of literature on nurse patient communication in palliative care. In this I will be able to critically analyse the articles and also gain knowledge about communication strategies in palliative care.
