While I was a student in the residential school, I had the opportunity of gaining practical experience in nursing care. For this reflective discussion, I aim to analyze the experiences I had, discuss relevant literature, and finally outline strategies related to the improvement of my nursing skills in clinical placement.
While reflecting on my experiences, I discovered that I did well when it came to the management of patients, their medications and their vital signs. On the other hand, I also identified and paid attention to areas that needed improvement, which comprised teamwork communication, patient care and safety, infection control, and medication management.
Firstly, the reduction of medication errors and improvement in infection control are essential elements for ensuring that the nursing practice is effective. According to a study by Rodziewicz & Hipskind, 2020) medication errors are the primary reason behind patient harm. In addition to this, improvement in practices of infection control can help in the reduction of healthcare-associated infections and improve patient outcomes. As per Kang et al. (2017), the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and regular education and training on hand hygiene can enhance infection control. Moreover, effective communication and collaboration along with leadership are also essential for safe and efficient patient care. Healthcare professionals need to communicate effectively with patients and colleagues to provide quality care. In addition, collaboration and strong leadership among healthcare professionals can result in enhanced patient outcomes and promote a positive work environment (Rangachari & Woods, 2020).
Firstly, I will ensure that checklists and standardized protocols are used for the minimization of medication errors and the improvement of infection control. For instance, the five rights of medication administration and adherence to standardized protocols for hand hygiene and PPE would be used (Colet et al., 2017). Secondly, prioritizing patient safety and adhering to the most optimal practices related to medication management, infection control, and other aspects of patient care will also be important (Dennerlein et al., 2020). I will work to maintain a positive work environment by promoting effective communication and collaboration.
Thirdly, I will focus on improving communication and collaboration skills with colleagues and patients. To achieve this, active listening, empathy and clear and concise language are important to ensure effective communication with patients (Ghosh et al., 2020). Lastly, regular training and education sessions would be important to stay updated about the latest practices in nursing care. In addition to this, the use of technology, such as electronic health records would also be used for the improvement of medication management and error reduction (Forsetlund et al., 2021).
Effective nursing practice requires the minimization of errors associated with medication, enhancement of infection control, effective communication, collaboration, and leadership. I plan to implement various strategies for the improvement of my nursing skills in clinical placement. Through the prioritization of patient safety and adherence to best practices in medication management and infection control, I aim to ensure that quality care is provided to all patients.
