The reflective framework is nursing is essential as it helps in the development of introspective analysis and promotes critical thinking and performance improvement. Through this paper I will reflect on a placement scenario where I learned about the importance of therapeutic communication. This reflective paper will apply the Gibbs model of reflection for description and analysis of the incident (Potter, 2015).
As a student nurse, I was placed in a clinical setting to learn about the clinical experience and processes. As a student nurse, my responsibility was to record the patient data and ensure assistance to my senior nurses. However, in one case, the patient I was catering to refused to share the details saying the information is private and she does not wish to share. The patient had a medical history of schizophrenia and this was my first time dealing with a patient with a chronic mental illness. I tried to engage patient in a therapeutic communication, however, I failed. I was then assisted by one of the senior nurses who helped communicate with the patient for the retrieval of required medical details.
As it was my first experience in the clinical setting, I was a little nervous as I was unaware of the modus operand and forms of function in the setting. When the patient refused to share the details I was a little confused as I did not know how to proceed further to get the required information essential for patient care. However, When I was assisted by a senior nurse, I could observe the difference in her approach and thus learn the importance of therapeutic communication and relationship in the clinical setting.
I was nervous and did not know how to approach the patient as this was my first experience with a patient with complex mental health conditions. Patients with a complex mental health condition require essential support that can facilitate their participation in a medical setting (Blake & Blake, 2019). This is promoted through rapport building and therapeutic communication that was demonstrated and also explained to me by the senior nurses in the facility.
Therapeutic communication and professional relationships are the core competencies of efficient nursing practice as also highlighted by the professional nursing standards established by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (Fischer, 2017). Therapeutic communication is crucial as it helps in the development of a strong interpersonal relationship with patients and facilitates the understanding of care needs. The approach has a crucial significance in the establishment of therapeutic relationships and is of major priority when dealing with patients that have complex mental healthcare needs (Abdolrahimi, 2017).
Through this experience, I have concluded that I need to develop my communication and therapeutic skills to advance as a competent nurse in clinical practice.
To improve my ability to develop a therapeutic relationship with the patient I will focus on the improvement of my communication skills (Blake & Blake, 2019). Communication is integral to a strong interpersonal and therapeutic relationship in nursing (Williams et al., 2018). I aim to improve these skills by learning from my seniors as well as university professors. I will ensure the active listening of the care needs of the patient (Blake & Blake, 2019). To improve my ability to develop therapeutic relationships with patients, I will also focus on learning through reading academic resources.
This paper provides a brief reflective analysis of clinical experience through the application of the Gibbs reflective cycle. This paper also discusses the future action plan for improvement of clinical practice and advancement as competent healthcare professional.
