Nursing leadership is a crucial concept that involves the action and position of authority by the nurses. It will inspire and influence other nurses to achieve their maximum potential. Application of nursing will draw on critical thinking skills to manage the team. Nursing leadership improves patient care, increases satisfaction and provides guidance in the complexities of healthcare administration (Cope & Murray 2017). The essay will be reviewing the effectiveness of nurse leaders and how they can show emotional intelligence. Followed by communicating and utilising the skills of team members to inspire and attain creativity in leadership practices that is assisting in leadership development.
In my perspective, nurse leaders in the oversee units are ensuring that other nurses will be following the standard protocols and procedures. It will be maintaining a high quality of care and safety of patients. I find that nurses who come from overseas still face the issue of disparity that is making them unable to be a part of the settings. I feel that the role of a leader needs to be established to make the nurses settle in the setting by which ample opportunities are provided. I feel that a nurse leader has to display respectfulness, trustworthiness, caring, empathy and approachability should be present. It will make the nurse leader get acclimated to the team (Magbity et al., 2020). The positive influence will be traced in terms of getting used to the environment of new settings. One of the aspects that are impacted due to the placement in overseas settings is emotional challenges. As the nurses are far from their native place and require support in terms of being used to the settings. I feel that a nurse's leader has to show the skill of identifying and regulating one's emotions that is making them able to understand others' emotions. It fosters communication, improves self-awareness and builds trustworthiness in a relationship (Malik et al., 2021). I feel that it is important for collaborative practices that make the nurses get involved in the team. Assuring communication with the team allows the nurses to provide practices that are suitable according to the protocol and standards. Altogether, it achieves effective leadership practices in healthcare settings.
Maslow's Theory of Motivation is a theory of motivation that has five categories: psychological needs, love and belonging needs, self-esteem and self-actualization need. It will create high motivation to fulfil the need that is assisting the needs of clients. I feel that it is providing the framework for assessing a client's needs that makes the health and social work need to be addressed (Zhu et al., 2019). McClelland's Achievement Motivation Theory is a second theory that states that every person will be having three main drivers that are need, achievement or affiliation and power. It is important to develop the culture and life experience that allow the achievement to solve problems. I feel that applying both theories is a must that is inclining with the needs of the team. Motivation by nursing leaders will allow the fostering and cultivating of teamwork that motivate the nursing staff to better work towards the goals (O'Donoghue & van der Werff, 2022). Motivation by team members will encourage them to achieve the goals and objectives. Therefore, motivation is an important need lie for nursing leaders that makes things to be manageable and set expectations. It will be giving mission, values and objectives clarity that accomplish the need for care.
I feel that nursing leadership will help in empowering the team that is motivated toward applying critical thinking skills and decision-making. I experienced a positive impact in terms of open team governance that is making the team members take the feedback and share their concerns anytime. It will allow the integration of open leadership communication by which nurses can step to the leaders anytime (Khan et al., 2019). In addition, the impact is also seen in terms of supportive and empathic nursing team relationships that are making them bring continuous professional development. To better deliver the practices, I feel that nurse leaders have to take feedback. Following are feedback strategies for the nursing leaders that can be applied in the settings. It can be taken in oral, written, informal and formal ways that help the nursing leader to reflect on their practices (Powers et al., 2019). I think informal is the most suited one that is bringing the nursing leaders to initiate a friendly conversation. Therefore, it is noted to empower the team feedback will also help the nursing leader to reflect on the practices.
In my view, transformational leadership is a great one that involves a grand vision and relying on your employees. Rao et al., (2019) is the one that is supporting the type of leadership. It makes the team eager to take the transformation and evolve in terms of personal and professional development. The team that is working according to the transformational leaders will be willing to commit the efforts, time and energy and make the supportive growth of nurses (Rao, 2019). I can see the positive impact of transformational leadership on my future skills which is making me able to get along with my team. It will also increase the way I am motivating my team and communicating that is ensuring that everyone is working in the same direction. In addition, I will also be able to implement the critical thinking skills that are important for the multidisciplinary aspect to be delivered.
With the critical analysis of my nursing leadership, I will be able to implement the nursing leadership skills that make me bring emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence will allow the nurses to implement collaborative practices that achieve goals and objectives. In my view, motivation also brings empowerment that leads the team members to be part of the team. Feedback from the team will improve the practices within the team that bring the desired outcomes. In conclusion, leadership will help nurses deal with any kind of challenge.
