The user expects the application to:-

a) be able to allow him or her to design the structure of his land, as it exists easily

b) easily add fence all around the land no-matter its shape

c) allow the creation of sectors or land part which can be designed easily

d) approximate the growth of his plants and shrubs to show them the outlook after fully grown

e) easy add and delete plants and shrubs on their piece of land or part of the garden

f) create a plan after designing and adding features and structures.

Constrains of the design

a) Irregular garden shapes which users may have which may be cumbersome to draw on the designing part.

b) Inadequate knowledge of the user on how they would like to design their garden.

c) Different climates that may not affect some trees the same way as others.

Design and its justifications

a) For a better hierarchy, I will start with a page to let the user draw the initial piece of land( the garden). The user will first select the shape of the land. If a square or a rectangle, the user will enter the measurements and the application is to generate the shape of the land. If it is a polygon, the application will let the user design it with drag-able lines with each line requesting the actual length. The user is supposed to create the angle themselves of the new line to allow the design of irregular land shapes.

b) To clarify on the proportionality, the piece of land drawn by the user will have measurements and will be against a scale to bring accuracy to the land designed.

c) the margins, of the garden, fences, terraces, and other structures will have a different color each to bring out a better contrast as well as the plants and shrubs will each have their own color texture and design.

d) For simplicity and easy feel, after designing the shape of the land, the next page will show the land and two side panels, one on the left and the other on the right. Panel one will have design structures and panel two will have plants and shrubs that the user can drag and drop.

e) A top panel or a header panel will also be included to show options such as print, undo, redo and save. This will enable the user to print the whole design or a part by selecting points of the part in the design.

Usability test

The usability test will be done by sampling random people. We will write simple documentation, which we will give to the random user to let them know the design better, understand its expectations, and then let them interact with the design itself. This will equip the users with more understanding of the design which will make it easier for them to give more appropriate answers. We will design a questionnaire to make sure the user gives as much accurate information as possible. Some of the questions in the questionnaire will be:-

i. What is your feeling on the look of the design?

ii. What are some problems you encountered while using this design?

iii. What parts of the design do you feel are lacking?

iv. What was the experience of using the design?

v. How clear is the documentation of the design?

vi. What were the expectations of the design?

This usability test will improve the design in the following ways: -

(a) The feedback from the users will include the look and feel of the design. This will help the designer to create a better look and feel designs embarking on the feedback.

(b) The users will list the problems or issues they encountered while using the design. This will inform the designer on their mistakes which will improve the design

(c) The users will give their opinion on which parts or components they feel are lacking which in-turn will allow the designer to add them to improve on their design.

(d) The rating of the outcome will also show the designer how efficient their design is, letting them add features or remove some to fit the goal of the design.
