Early childhood could be stated as a very delicate and critical phase of the child’s life as in this stage they undergo rapid growth in brain development stimulated by the surroundings. So the educational and environmental aspect takes centre stage in development of the kids having long-term implications as they grow towards adulthood (Groleau, Pludye, & Nadeau, 2009).
In this phase, physical activities play a vital role as it has direct implications in development of brain and intelligence of the children. But the technological advancement like smartphones and other digital gadgets had made the kids prone to such tools. The phenomenon was leading them to a sedentary lifestyle and making them dull, affecting both their physical and mental health (Stichter, Clarke, & Dunlap, 2004). The attractiveness of games on the mobile phones is making them hooked to the gadget for hours over quality playing time at the parks with the children of their age in the neighbourhood.
There is another issue which needs deliberate attention—the engagement of the parents with their children. In the fast-paced life of the 21st century it is difficult for the parents to spend time with their children as they get barely any quality time for themselves. Despite the fact, it would be ideal for the parents to spend spare time with their children, especially during the weekends. The aspect of quality time spent with the parents would enable the children to understand the elements of family bond and values integral for their growth and development (Stichter, Clarke, & Dunlap, 2004).
A child attached with his parents shows improved signs of development in studies and other aspects of life while growing.
The paper for the sake of research would take relevance of the secondary data to be derived from a variety of articles and publications concerning the issue.
According to the UNESCO website, early childhood means the period between birth and 8 years of age which is often defined as an ideal time for growth and development (UNESCO, 2019). It holds that the aspect of Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) is not limited to elementary education alone. Lewis (2015) finds out ECCE strives for universal development of the child taking consideration of the physical, social, cognitive, and emotional development for the purpose of lifelong learning.
The role of the parents in the early childhood development is crucial as the child tends to learn rapidly during the initial years, especially the first three years of their life (UNICEF, 2019). So it strives to be a quality time that both the parents are supposed to spend with their children to develop a bond between them.
Stichter, Clarke, & Dunlap (2004) point out that the company and the surroundings in which the children grow have strong implications in shaping their brain architecture and lead a physically and mentally healthy life. A child having proper attention and love of his parents tends to learn in a fast and convenient manner.
The research paper has showed the relevant aspect of various sources like UNESCO and UNICEF in pointing out the matters like association of the parents and requirement of a suitable environment for the learning and growth of the children.
The engagement of the children with their parents would tend them to be interactive and lively, taking their attention away from the electronic gadgets (Lewis, 2015). This element would be feasible in making the kids active in participating in physical activities like playing with the children of their age group.
So the aspects of engagement of the parents in developing their kids and tending their attention for a non-sedentary lifestyle are directly related to each other.
The paper concludes the fact that it is crucial for the educators to take the children out of their dependency on the electronic gadgets like mobile phones. The time spent on mobile games could be better exploited by engaging them in physical activities like playing at parks with the children of their age. This would help them in having a healthy life and it needs to be done under the supervision and motivation of their parents.
The parents need to spend quality time with their children, taking time out of their busy schedule.
There should be provision for playing and outdoor activities in the primary schools.
Use of electronic gadgets like mobile phones by the students should be banned by the school authorities in their premises.
