The three community work discussed in Rothman and Tropman reading includes locality development, social planning and social action.
Social Planning
Out of these three community work approaches, according to me, social planning model is one of the best interventions to deal with community works in regional, organizational and national level. Social planning model refers to the community work which is deliberately planned to solve problems related to society. Under this community work, an agency undertakes an exercise to evaluate the welfare needs of the community members. It then suggests a blueprint containing strategies which must be implemented in the community for improving the conditions of the people in the region. Social planning is a process that schedules social programs and services to address social problems (Rothman 1995). Social planners gather data about the community and analyse the collected data so as to make the most feasible and logical decisions in favour of the organization. It is necessary because without planning about the services and policies neither government agencies nor non-profit organizations can work effectively for the benefit of the community (Kenny amp Connors, 2017). It is based on a top-down approach to solving substantial social problems such as delinquency, housing and mental health problems. This community work gives very little opportunity for the common people to decide and plan out a process for the development purpose. Agencies select social workers on the basis of the technical and public handling skills so that they can work effectively to implement programs planned for the wellbeing of all the community members in the region. It has been identified that this approach has gained attention in the last few years in both rural as well as urban areas. I realised that it is a useful technique to guide for analysis and social action purposes. I even analysed that by making some changes in the framework the organization can gain additional insights to make things more useful. Social planning was devised with an aim to improve the quality of life in communities. It is sometimes even referred to as neighbourhood planning because it takes place mostly in neighbourhood settings. Social planning education is delivered to students so that they can learn about urban planning, public health and social work by emphasising on different planning disciplines.
After analysing the research, I identified that social planning through different projects can not only help in improving the existing condition of the community but also help in developing it into an entirely new place. It is one of the best practices because social planning provides a framework for the social workers to use their experience and knowledge in preparing some programs for the community in which they are working (Rothman 1995). According to me, social planning also helps in organizing social resources in the best possible manner for completing community development projects. It can be used to assess the social impacts of land and water use. I felt that the analysis of land and water will help in preparing some policies and procedures so as to achieve desired goals. Strategic policies and plans will improve the effectiveness of the entire community and will help in fulfilling the different needs of the community members. I recognized that locality development and social action totally depends on social planning practices thus it is best community practice out of the three Rothman community work approaches.
