Searles Chinese room argument is a thoughtful experiment of John Searle (1980) and associated deviation (1984) which is credited to have counters to claims of artificial intelligence. The concept of AI that is artificial intelligence as supported by the John Searle- claims that computer can do or might at some day do. The argument of Searle is based on two components mainly, syntax doesnt suffice for semantics and Pains cause minds. He states that computer is technically sound and if answers in a way the input is given. Before this process of input-output, the program is devised in such a way that makes computer understandable in binary form like 0s and 1s. Wang, Gu, David, Wang, Yang, Searle, Zhu, amp Timmis (2018) When computers are given right program then they are said to understand the nature of object. Searle differentiates strong AI with weak AI. According to weak Ai, it is computers that seemingly operate with unreal understanding like Just-as if. For example, calculation is only calculation nothing more than this.

Chinese room thought experiment and arguments are that strong AI ask you to have imagination as a monolingual English speaker. This English speaker been locked in a room with batch of Chinese writing. The rules co-relates with one form of formal symbol to other form of formal symbol. It is you who behave like a computer. It is script applier mechanism where Searle imagines that he is unable to understand the Chinese language. It does not what programming is given to computer and if it process the meaningless then despite this it is worthless AI. Schindler amp Pcker (2019) There are replies and rejoinders when he was to confront a situation with many workers of AI. The system reply focuses on the concept of there should be identified the wrong agent. The thought experiment shows that there is a would-be subject-of-mental state and rejoinder let the individual memorize the rules as made.

Specific theories that Searle believes to refute are virtual mind theory and theory of mind. In the first theory he refutes to accept the argument as there is no understanding of the Chinese language which tells us about it lacks the AI, i.e. strong AI. With this theory, it is believed that it is not a strong AI that acts but instead of this, it is a weaker one. For example, there is a Chinese room and the controller of the room does not understand the language except the paper machine code, then virtual mind theory states that most important factor is how understanding is created rather than room operator is one who understands the signals differently. For example, a CPU, Pain of the computer is programmed in such a way that it understands the Chinese language but it does not mean that it is supportive on. Morgan (2018) The reason behind this is that virtual agent is totally differentiated from the room operator and also from that of entire system. For example, talking example of virtual characters in computers are video games, personal digital assistants and the characters are not identical with those who create them.

According to Minsky and Sloman, the virtual mind will reply when the Chinese room argument first occurred and minimal approach to the physical system was considered. In widely read paper, computational and consciousness, it is required to have implementation of the supporting agents to the computer. Li (2018) It means that one when looks to the control operator then one is likely to be only the casual facilitator. So, what makes a great argument and theory on the basis of this concept is requirement of the understanding of the agent to the computer. There is no understanding so created.

Even Cole has suggested that it is neither the operator of the room nor the machine that is deriving the information but it is only the way computer is being programmed, as it is programmed to understand the Chinese language.

Another theory that he claims is theory of mind which states that consciousness is the primary object that enable the human being to behave and act like a being. Take a example of water, as it is colorless and tasteless, if it is programmed that it is tasteful, then machine will take the same input to deliver the output.

No, these theories cannot be defended against the Searles theory. There are three reason of it. Firstly, it is the fact that without any specification, none of the machinery will work. So, it is like a keyboard that operates when a commands is given to. For example, in modern sense, say high level languages, they deliver the output that is correct but if they are designed with some other output, it may result in compilation of the error. So, Searle is right that there is more specification needed. Secondly, the consciousness is important part of the human mind. It supports his argument with realistic evidence that how a computer can understand the Chinese language when such functions are not assigned to it. Hermjakob, May, Pust, amp Knight (2018) In this way, there should be no consciousness and the computer will not in form of readable data and instructions. So, with no consciousness, it is expected that computer will not perform well. Thirdly, Searle accuses the AI as the product of dualism and he calls it so because it learns and behaves as other being does so. Cooper (2018) For example, if the activity of the machine and human is same, then it is naturally opposite. So, his refusal to accept the AI is true.

Finally, in other words it may be concluded that there is a dualistic assumption and mind is no doubt concerned but Pain has no role to play. There are several examples taken that illustrates this essay. The arguments and theory are presented to understand what Searle really want to observe from weak and strong AI. According to him, computers can play chess game intelligently and cleverly. So, according to him, the Pains are a machine that works and plays significant role in distributing the piece of information to other. So, he disbelieve in re-thinking of AI. So, machine can work but AI is not successful.
