I have learnt a lot about Aboriginal people personally and professionally regarding their culture safety. A secure and environment that is culturally safe is one where everyone feels safe and it in turn strengthens their culture, identity and community. Aboriginal people have own history and it has been comprehended that they were neglected for the majority of the time. In this context I feel that there lies a lacking of cultural safety as they have deferent traditions and culture in comparison to non- aboriginal community.
Before studying this course, I was unfamiliar with indigenous culture and their practices. I have had similar thoughts between aboriginals and non-aboriginals. I thought the health of the aborigines was their way of life. My opinion was that alcohol consumption, drug use and stressful life on the land is their own choice which has created a health disease among the population. Little did I know that communication skills also subject a pivotal role in providing good health service.
In context to studying cultural safety, I learned that as a nurse it is very imperative to know that a culturally safe environment is more important to indigenous peoples (aboriginals). There must be a spiritually, socially, mentally and physically protected environment where culturally related people can freely express their identity and their need. As nurses, we need to know culturally safe communication skills. Moreover, poor communication skills will lead to health crises for indigenous peoples and people and the Torres Islanders, so all healthcare providers should be fair and equitable when arranging effective care (Edcan.org.au, 2018).
I felt really bad knowing that culturally bound aboriginal populations had to deal with so many health problems. I believe that access to healthcare is an important part of every person’s life, so there should be fairness and equity in access to healthcare for every person. The life expectancy of indigenous peoples is shorter than that of non-indigenous peoples. Although indigenous peoples have their own history, culture and way of life, health care providers need to pay more attention to preserving culture in order to care for these people.
I believe there is no equality in indigenous health care, racism and communication barriers still exist that prevent them from identifying ineffective care in achieving results.
I realized that culture plays a very innate part in determination of one’s health. The life expectancy in context to Aboriginal population is exclusively connected on their behaviours of health but the factors like racism, the way how they live really influence on Aboriginal people life expectancy (Wilson et al., 2016).
I consider it to be important in the direction of embedding Cultural Safety all across Australia based Nursing as well as Midwifery sections. In the context of this EdCaN healthcare learning-based resources are quite helpful for nurses who are working with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. There are a number of steps associated with the aspect of Cultural safety, skill development, as well as communication. It refers to the edcan learning resources that are instrumental in supporting the noble cause of serving these backward community people of Australia. The available resources associated with the development of the medical facility for the aboriginal as well as the torres-strait-islander-peoples refer to their cultural-safety as well as the aspect of communication. It is important for the nurses like me and the health care advisories to work at the interface in health. I need to focus more on the development of individual health professionals as well as their organizations. This way I can address the aspect of health equity in a more efficient way.
Effective communication skills play an important role in providing effective care. All healthcare providers should create a culturally safe environment. As nurses we need to be able to work effectively in intercultural spaces where true collaboration can be achieved (Catsinam.org.au, 2017).
It is required to always be aware and sensitive about the culture the healthcare users follow and the language they speak. If necessary, non-verbal communication should help indigenous peoples to open up to their problems and speak to them without hesitation.
Indigenous peoples (aboriginals) need to take care of their own health. As nurses we must respect and recognize the unique value of Australia’s past, present and future. The protection of indigenous cultures should be implemented across the country in healthcare, which improves their well-being and prolongs their lifespan (Wilson et al., 2016).
I learned about the importance of cultural safety and protection and effective communication skills are very imperative for aboriginals. I think this study will actually help me for future reference in the workplace on how to treat indigenous peoples and how to make them more comfortable with their general care. On the whole, the topic of cultural protection and effective communication has taught me a lot about the cultural background of the indigenous population. This course will help me a lot while working as a registered nurse and taking care of aboriginal community.
