The term mentoring refers to the technique of guiding, educating, counseling, coaching, instructing, learning, training and teaching in a right and ethical way that may take place among every person across various kinds of knowledge bases (KB) and settings. In todays advanced and competitive scenario of the business world, apart from supervising and controlling employees, lower-level managers and other subordinates, managers are required to be collaborative as well as interactive experts and professionals (Kraiger, Finkelstein, amp Varghese, 2018). New model has taken over the previous relationship model of boss and employee as it requires the association of top-level managers, middle-level managers, lower-level managers and employees in an organisation. The aim of this essay is to study the importance of mentoring for effective workplace behaviour. It focuses on the role of the mentor in the workplace and discusses how mentors look towards organisational success in a cultural way. The essay also covers various mentorship programs and events taking place in an organisation and discusses about the importance of interaction between mentors and employees.
According to Thornton (2019), the role of the mentor is very important to form effective and possible changes resulting in the success of production outcomes of the organisation along with the change in ones career that he or she serves. These mentors invest their time, power, energy, skills and support to the fullest in order to achieve the professionalism with the success point of the organisation and also to identify a determined way in their lives. I agree with the fact as I have also observed that professionals investing time in work helps developing as a leader in the world of business and emerging as a management instructor in the world of academics. With the support of mentoring, this observation has also permitted me to undertake a new way in the journey of my life. On the other side, apart from the practice of guiding and instructing, some other issues are also required to be addressed by the mentors or managers that need to be resolved by implementing correct actions, decisions and strategies in an organisation. This approach helps in establishing overall effective workplace behaviour. One of these issues arising in todays corporate world is the workplace harassment which reflects a high-risk-driven threat to an organisation, especially when the degree of the same risk or threat is not known (Maclellan, 2019). The actual level of the harassment till recent times had always been out of sight and not viewed as it is in fact happening. This was because of the unwillingness and fear to report the same but some changes have also effectively and efficiently initiated encouraging the MeToo movement in order to resolve the same that is the issue of workplace harassment which has helped reducing the problem (Bloomberg News, 2018).
According to Maclellan (2019), creating a high-quality workplace culture and environment is a key issue in an organisation since establishing a valid, authentic and constant organisational change includes numerous aspects is time consuming. But in my opinion, primarily setting a right culture of the workplace should be given priority as it is the major key leading towards the improvement, management, efficiency, effectiveness, productivity, improvement as well as development of an organisation.
The article identifies that workplace harassment results because of power misuse and having untouchable employees and workers. This implies that all the managers or mentors should be capable of maintaining and managing an appropriate behaviour in order to facilitate the right cultural workplace. It is very essential for top-level managers or mentors to set up the tone which other employees should follow on and the member of the organisation must be held answerable in case he/she fails to follow the same (McCutcheon, 2019).
The article reflects that every orgsanisation finds it helpful to integrate its own scenario-based trainings to the members. Practices including Pence effect can also be helpful in the organisation where managers avoid mentoring women as they fear of getting trapped in the harassment claims and charges. Even though this avoidance of mentoring women would lead members to back out of this sexual harassment complaints but it will also result into gender discrimination complaints and may affect careers of many women also (Bloomberg News, 2018).
Article highlights that to resolve the issues of the harassment individuals should be encouraged not to hide the issue but to speak out the same. The senior level mentors should then perform on the issue acknowledged or observed to educate, guide and teach employees about the standards of the organisation in order to improve and maintain the workplace behaviour (Harmon, 2019). The article highlights that it is quite very difficult when someone gets harassed at workplace and comes forward to ask for support. In these situations a person needs mental support. It is important that such issues are handled with proper care and confidentiality. The role of a mentor is to help and guide people towards bigger decisions and directions. Mentors adopts certain mentoring approaches and different strategies for mentoring that results in enhanced mentormentee relationships and hence improved workplace behavior (Meeuwissen, Stalmeijer, amp Govaerts , 2019). The article reveals that mentors help employees in working towards the right direction based on their likes and dislikes. According to me The coach in workplace understands and studies the behavioral issues any individual faces and tries to strengthen and develop a positive attitude in their mentee during this difficult time.
The METOO movement helps in overcoming stress for many sexually harassed people at their workplace like Hollywood and many other places. It is really very difficult to voice your story of sexual abuse at workplace. Sometimes I think we are not able to understand the support provided by the mentor in our workplace but in a long run we understand the importance of mentorship. The article also highlights that the importance of mentor in workplace and from a research I found that data has been collected from two different surveys of 253 students under a mentoring program in China. The result shows that the mentoring program is significantly related to the positive effects such as satisfaction in life (Wen, Chen, Dong, amp Shu, 2019).
The mentorship program helps any individual to share their ideas, knowledge and grievance. There are many policies and programs in organization that focus on employees mental health and also improve employees behavior in a positive way. These programs are very effective and create an efficient work environment. According to a research twelve mentees and seventeen mentors took part in the grant review workshop and nineteen mentors were matched to mentees in the program. According to a review since 2014, thirteen NIH grants have been awarded. The mentees accept that this program helps them to improve grant research content, and also provide support in career development (Vasylyeva, Daz-Gonzlez et al,. 2019). According to my opinion if anyone gets a chance to enroll in any of these types of mentorship programs than he/she should go for it, since the mentorship program helps individual to develop their skills and enhance their experience and knowledge also mentorship programs provide solution to employees problems at workplace.
It is very important for a mentor to know his/her mentee, about their attitude, behavior, background, education, achievement, long term hopes and desires. It is very important that mentoring relationship should deliver a positive response, sometimes these relationship can also cause negative impact on the mentees as well as mentors (Lester, Goodloe, Johnson, amp Deutsch 2019). According to the article, it is also very important that employee should also know his mentor so that he/she can easily discuss their problems for this the mentor should be approachable so that the employees can ask for any kind of help when needed. It is the responsibility of the mentor to guide his mentee towards a bright future and a satisfactory life. The main focus of the mentor is to make mentee realize about the aspirations around him/her. It is very important to recognize the path any individual needs to follow to achieve his/her goals and for this mentors play a very important role.
Always try to understand that for every small problem mentor is not available, this is why it is important that you should face small problems by your own. A mentor is for support and guidance he shows you a broader aspect of life. It is also important to understand that frequently contacting to your mentor will only creates trouble for the mentor, it is better to ask problems that are really important and difficult to solve by you. But you should not remain quite on issues like this. You should raise your voice and discuss with your head. In many organizations there are different stages of dealing with workplace harassment. To drive an inclusive work culture is not just a risk issue but also the right of employees.
From the above article I came to a conclusion that mentoring is very important, not only because the skills and the knowledge they have learnt from their mentor but also mentoring provides personal support. Mentoring also provide professional as well as social support (Retrouvey et al., 2019). It is a professional activity which creates a trusted relationship and a definite commitment. According to my understanding, we cannot tolerate the organizations as a workplace where valuable staff becomes victims and they feel fearful while interacting with their supervisors. Therefore in my opinion organizations must provide effective coaching, professional development and mentoring opportunities to their employees.
