The medication safety standard of the NSQHS ensures that medicines are prescribed, dispensed and administered in a way that is safe and appropriate. Furthermore, it also makes sure that consumers are informed and have an understanding related to their medications and the risks involved. The scope of this standard involves providing governance such that medications are used safely and with quality. Secondly, it includes reducing the instances of medication errors and patient harm. Lastly, it includes the involvement of patients in decision-making (Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Healthcare, 2023).
Positive patient outcomes result in the development of trust in the healthcare system. In addition to this, it is beneficial for clinicians as it provides them with a supportive environment. Furthermore, healthcare organisations benefit when it comes to their reputation and goodwill through the retention of patients (Robertson & Long, 2018). Moroever, adhering to the standard also leads to improved patient safety, fewer medication errors and enhanced health outcomes, which result in reduced length of stay. Lastly, it leads to cost savings through reduced patient mortality and morbidity, eliminating the need for readmission and additional treatments (Park & Giap, 2020).

Firstly, an RN is responsible for the administration of medications. This involves keeping a check on the dosage, timing and route of administration of the medication. Secondly, it is the duty of nurses to keep the patients informed about the interactions and side effects of the medications involved. Thirdly, it is also essential for an RN to make sure that any kind of medication error related to the dosage or administration of medicines is prevented. Lastly, it is essential for the nurse to maintain appropriate reporting and documentation of medication records and patient response (Bucnall et al., 2019).
To ensure that patients with acute health conditions receive high-quality care, it is important that firstly the RN conducts a thorough assessment of the patient’s medical history, existing conditions and allergies. Secondly, it is also the duty to follow appropriate pain management and infection prevention protocols. Thirdly, it is important that the RN follows the Five Rights of medication administration. Furthermore, it is the responsibility of the nurse to follow continuous monitoring and assessment. Lastly, it is the responsibility of the Rn to always advocate in the best interest of the patient. (Härkänen et al., 2018).
